Recovery of lost bones and cartilage
As a treatment method, anti-inflammatory agents and artificial joint replacement surgery are being used, but there is a challenge that the lost cartilage tissue cannot be restored. The present invention relates to the cartilage formation-promoting effect of a bisphosphonate (BP) formulation, MPMBP. As shown in the right figure, toluidine blue staining of the mandibular condyle in ovariectomized estrogen-deficient osteoporosis model rats (OVX rats) revealed that the thickness of the cartilage layer (chondrocyte layer + hypertrophic chondrocyte layer), which had decreased due to OVX, increased with MPMBP administration. The increased cartilage was rich in proteoglycans, restoring the proteoglycan levels in the cartilage layer that had decreased due to osteoporosis to normal amounts. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the number of osteoclasts in the subchondral bone layer decreased (data not shown).
